What’s in my bag

One of the questions that every photographer gets asked is what’s in your camera bag. I shoot with a very limited set of equipment for two main reasons: weight and cost.

I take most of my gear with me wherever I go. Be it down to the river for a couple of hours or up a mountain for 3 days. This means that I limit the things I carry and for something to make it into my bag it has to earn its place. Gear is expensive and, like most photographers, I also have limited spare cash to spend so each item has been carefully chosen to add to my bag.

Without further ado, here is what my bag contains:

  1. Canon 80D
  2. Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM
  3. Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
  4. SanDisk Extreme Plus 128GB microSD
  5. Peak Design Capture clip
  6. Joby GorillaPod Ballhead X
  7. Manfrotto MMC3-01 compact monopod
  8. GoPro Hero 7 Black
  9. Joby mini GorillaPod
  10. Spare batteries
  11. Various spare microSD cards

If anyone really wants to know, the bag it all goes in is an Osprey Talon 22 (which I would highly recommend as a day bag for anyone). I say these items are in my bag but it is rare that the camera itself is actually inside. That’s where the Peak Design Capture clip comes in. It’s attached to the strap of my rucksack where my camera hangs when it is not in use. It’s comfortable, out of the way and very easy to access. If there is one piece of equipment that I’d recommend anyone to get it would be one of these. I’ll write a more in-depth review about it in the future but if you are interested, check out their website or get one from Amazon.

  • With the camera attached to the clip
  • The clip without the camera

When I am going out shooting birds specifically I keep the 70-300mm lens on all the time. Other times when I am up a mountain or for a long walk I will usually have the 15-85mm lens on the camera with the 70-300mm lens in my pack.

What should I add next to my gear? Let me know in the comments below.
